“Roots, Shoots, and Hoots”
Knock, knock! Hoooo’s there? We’re back for another fun-filled week at Camp Mocanaquah! This year, we’re all about NATURE…from the ground up! We’ll learn about how plants grow and the homes and food they provide for all kinds of animals. The week will be full of outdoor activities including learning about what owls eat, how to identify trees, how to make recycled PLANTABLE paper, and so much more!
This week is gonna be tree-mendous!
Of course, swimming, songs, games, cooking, “Wacky Wednesday,” hiking, and as always, the Friday Cookout, will round out the week of fun.

About Camp Mocanaquah
Camp Mocanaquah has been serving the Girl Scouts of the Back Mountain since 1989! Started by Debbie Jury, Charlotte Barrett, and Franny Williams, it has changed hands several times since. Debbie Serfoss and Marjorie Adams served as directors from 1996-2004, and Michelle Tomaselli (with help of Kelly Williams) was director from 2004-2010. Andrea Carr and Deb Jorda co-directed camp for the 2011-2012 camp years, and now Andrea and Kelly (Williams) Cook have directed camp together during summers 2013-2019, took a 2 year Covid-19 pandemic hiatus, and now back for 2022 and 2023 with the overwhelming support of our parent volunteers.
Camp Mocanaquah is named in memory of Frances Slocum, who in 1778, when she was only 5 years old was captured by a tribe of Delaware Indians from her home in Wilkes Barre, PA. "Mocanaquah" is a Delaware word meaning "little bear" or "young bear." Frances lived among the Delaware the remainder of her life. When her family finally found her living in Peru, Indiana nearly 60 years after her capture, she refused to return to her old life, stating "I have always lived with the Indians, and they have always used me very kindly. I am used to them. The great spirit has always allowed me to live with them, and I wish to live and die with them....I do not wish to live anywhere but here." Frances Slocum died in 1847 at the age of 74 in Peru, IN. Frances Slocum State Park is named in recognition of the Frances Slocum trail and cave and where the Delaware rested with Frances soon after her capture.
